Designing cutlery for diabetics: (forecasting assignment).


To further diabetes living and lifestyle through innovative, people centered cutlery design

Focus: Type 2 Diabetes

blood sugar levels become higher than usual. Glucose is less able to enter the cells and do its job of supplying energy (insulin resistance). This causes the blood sugar levels to rise, making the pancreas produce more insulin. People suffering from diabetes may feel different to their peers and may want to live a more adventurous lifestyle than their diabetes allows, therefore my product makes it easier to control and monitor your eating eating habits without the constant hassle of pricking and checking blood sugar levels with needles.

Diabetes living:

A big role of Diabetes living is 'diet management'. A Diabetes diet doesn't consist of different foods, you just need to be conscious and smart about what you eat. Eating foods that are high in fiber  fruit and vegetables, things that are low in fat and salt and sugar.

A general recommendation is to eat about 2-3 carbohydrate servings (30-45g) at each meal for women and 3-4 for men (45-65g). Limit carbohydrate snacks to 1-2 15-30g portions a day.


Eating right and losing weight are two of the most important components of managing diabetes and keeping blood sugar levels normal. Normal is being defined as being 90 - 130mg/dl an hour or two after you have started your meal. I wish to design a set of cutlery that helps diabetes patients manage their blood sugar levels as they eat. this will make it easier for users to manage their sugar levels wirelessly through infrared blood glucose monitoring creating stress free living without the use of needles.

Technology (forecasting):

Non-evasive infrared blood glucose monitoring. The technique uses Raman spectroscopy, a method that identifies chemical compounds based on the frequency of vibrations of the bonds holding the molecule together. The technique can reveal glucose levels by simply scanning a patient’s arm or finger with near-infrared light, eliminating the need to draw blood. Researchers have been developing this technology for about 15 years. One of the major obstacles they have faced is that near-infrared light penetrates only about half a millimeter below the skin, so it measures the amount of glucose in the fluid that bathes skin cells (known as interstitial fluid), not the amount in the blood. To overcome this, the team came up with an algorithm that relates the two concentrations, allowing them to predict blood glucose levels from the glucose concentration in interstitial fluid.


Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death and can lead to permanent disability and poor health, my aim is to make a product that will allow Diabetes patients to measure their blood sugar levels while they eat. This is great for younger users as it teaches them good eating habits and creates a better more stable diabetes living environment. The cutlery set is design for home and hospital use, I.E a family could buy a set and the interface for the wireless blood glucose monitoring only needs to be attached when the diabetes patient is using it, otherwise it is ergonomically, aesthetically designed cutlery.
